Internet censorship

Thu Nov 17, 2011, 9:48 AM
EDIT: Ok... that would be funny if it wasn't just plain creepy. Where did the first 38 comments go to? [link] I know it's probably a glitch, but isn't it just creepy that people complain about the government and a few hours later their comments disappear without a trace? Bad, BAD timing. Did the censorship reach my profile too?

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the US Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The US government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

What's worse, it won't even work! Why? To understand the process behind domain blocking, watch this video:

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

What can you do about it?
Tell Congress not to censor the internet and join the protest NOW! - [link]

Doesn't Congress realize that this bill goes against everything outlined in the 1st amendment? Does Congress realize they are trying to pass an unconstitutional law? No one is going to let this pass.

Besides, what about "fair use" laws?

This goes with so many things people have been fussing over. Honestly, so many problems could be avoided entirely if people would just stop trying to control other people like this. There sexuality, personal choices, now the internet. Oh boy, what a world we live in.

It makes me laugh when I see politicians acting like they know what they are doing. This bill is bad, not enough specification and definitely out to get the small guy.

I was not able to post something here before, but I have signed the sheet, on the link you have posted. I think that this is just crazy and absolutely needs to be stopped. This bill would be the next step to a totalitarian world, where everything can be censored, where the opinions can be manipulated, even easier than just now, and where some people can judge what is worth to be still there and what should be censored. I hope that this can be stopped...

it's because they have nothing to do than to try to control EVERYTHING!!! We could be expending that money into new energy sources, education, better healthcare, but NOOOOOOO, we ave to censor the internet. so stupid

The comment glitch has been happening to lots of people, actually, even on things unrelated to the bill. I think its just a glitch that DAland is dealing with, and not necessarily fixing, cause apparently, its been going on for a while now.
Has yet to happen to me, tho.

Also, the US government is full of useless idiots that dont know what they're doing. They'd rather expend time and money n stuff that doesnt even really matter than do something useful.
