Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.

So what's this new feature?
At the moment, deviantART has many different types of content (e.g. journals, news and deviations) which are all different to use, located in different places, and produce completely different types of content.
The aim of this new feature is to unify all these systems, making them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality

How are we going to achieve this?
The most obvious and most widely used content you see on deviantART is Deviations. So the best way of merging all the current content into one, is to make Journals, News and Blogs into Deviations

Why is this better?
Apart from making content on deviantART simpler for new users, Journals and News will gain functions of deviations such as, favourites,

Mini RantJust something I'm writing because I'm bored.
I think the one thing I hate most about young artists is that alot of times they ignore body types to make the character more "sexy" to them.
Mostly it's with characters that are more muscular and they turn them into bishies. I'm sorry, but Ryu from Street Fighter is supposed to be a tough guy. Making him skinnier and more feminine than Chun Li just creeps me out. Same reaction when you give a twelve year old anime girl boobs the size of watermelons. Believe me, I'm tempted to do the same thing with my pics, but I'm able to put my prefferences aside for accuracy. Not only that, it really hurts your art if you can only draw one body type, so if anything that's a reason to avoid making you Big Macintosh gijinka look weaker than alot of AJ humanizations out there. He's a farmer and he moved a house while under the Love Poison. He should look more like Cody Travers or hell even Cray from BoF IV.

Brushes

This is somehow a continuation of the previous journal with a listing of tutorials I use.

People ask me about what brushes do I use even more often than about me making tutorials. Unfortunately here I might help only Photoshop users as I've never used SAI or GIMP and my Corel Painter worked so unbelievably slow on my machine that recently I've simply uninstalled it.

To be honest, the brush I use most often is a simple round brush with tablet pressure controlling the opacity.

With that baby I paint almost everything starting from under-painting and ending on medium details. Yet, there are all sorts of different brushes I use for other things - hair, texturing, backgrounds, foliage and so on. Here are a few sets I have installed. I do not use every single brush from them and I've deleted most of them right after installation... sometimes leaving as much as 1-5 brushes from a set of 30. You can get rid of unwanted brushes by either using the preset manager in the brush menu panel or by clicking a brush while holding ALT key. It's not good to have too many brushes on your list. Not only will it confuse you but also it might cause slower brush-list loading on older machines.

After downloading and installing a brush set always test every single brush - play with it on a clear canvas, test it in different colours and using different strokes. Pick only those which you like and know how to use, delete the others or at least move them to the bottom of the list, leaving the most often used at the top.

If you have any questions related to using brushes, then go ahead and ask. I'll try to answer all your questions and use my awesome engrish skills to explain as much as possible.

Would mind telling me what you have for the settings for your airbrush here, or where you downloaded it if you did so? On Photoshop Elements I downloaded a pack that had one similar, but I started using CS5 and don't have the pack anymore and I'm not sure which it was. I was trying to play with the default hard round opacity brush, but I can't seem to make it work.

If you're using CS5 then the brush I'm using most often is one of the round brushes from the standard set. One is called Round hart 60 3 and the other one Hard Round Pressure Opacity. I don't change any settings for those two.

I only recently started using more than the basic hard round brush and adjusting it's hardness. I've avoided some brushed because they seem like cheating to me, like fur brushed for example, but I'll have to take a look at some brushed for texture
